Organizations
Altar Guild
The care of the Lord's Table, pulpit, baptismal font, and the church's
furnishings is the ministry of this group. Two or three group members
prepare the church for the Eucharist on Sundays and holy days. When baptisms
are held, Guild members prepare the font and Lord's Table. The Guild is
also responsible for the weekly and seasonal adornment of the Lord's Table
with flowers and candles. Inquiries can be sent via e-mail to Randi
Roernes or by calling her at 883-0250. Vases are $40, centerpieces
are $30 and candles are $10. Dates are available on a first come-first
serve basis.
Christmas Workshop
The Christmas Workshop sponsors an annual Fair on the Saturday before
Thanksgiving Day. The group plans the event and enlists the working support
of all parish members. Proceeds from the Fair are given to mission support
of the wider Church and capital improvement projects within the congregation.
Church Choir
Under the direction of Peris Alban, Director of Music, the Church Choir
is open to all who enjoy choral singing. From September through June the
Church Choir sings every week in worship. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings
from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Musical selections include both classical
and contemporary works.
Church Council
The Church Council, twelve members elected by the parish family, acts
as the congregation's trustees of this not-for-profit religious corporation.
The Council coordinates the life of the parish by carrying out its duties
of care (oversees finances), loyalty (acts faithfully for the church's
purpose), and obedience (complies with NYS & Federal laws and regulations
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).
Except for the officers, every Council member customarily chairs a working
committee. These include Audit, Education, Evangelism, Fellowship, Finance,
Investment, Membership, Mission Endowment, Music & Worship, Stewardship,
Ushers and Youth.
Grace Guild
This ministry group is the local chapter of the national organization,
Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA). The Guild
educates parish members on the specialized ministries of the national
Church and its subsidized partners in mission. By sponsoring bake, plant
and tag sales throughout the year, the Guild customarily gives all proceeds
to ministries outside of the local faith family. Some of the projects
they support include soup kitchens, shelters for the homeless and for
domestic violence victims, summer camp for at-risk children, Port Washington's
Parent Resource Center in its Outreach program, and a free dental program
for children without coverage.
Kids' Klub Choir
Under the direction of Elaine Ajello, Children's Music Minister, the children's
choir practices during Kid's Klub on Tuesdays. A schedule of children's
anthems in the Sunday Service is developed at the discretion of the director.
Parish Ensemble
The Director of Music brings together volunteer instrumentalists from
the church family and forms an ensemble that plays on festival occasions,
including Christmas Eve and Easter. The ensemble includes stringed, brass,
and reed instruments. Accompanying the hymn-singing, the instrumentalists
also present selections of major classical works in the Christian tradition.
Troop 241
The congregation charters Troop 241 of the Boy Scouts of America. Well
known for its program of outdoor education, this Troop is open to all
boys in grades six through twelve. The Scoutmaster is Kendall Walsh (kendall@intellibot.cc)
and the Troop Committee Chair is Dr. Bill Allured. Troop meetings are
held from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the church every Thursday the public schools
are in session.
Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon
While not sponsored by the congregation, we have a long history of making
space available to these self-help groups for persons in recovery and
for families. The Alcoholics Anonymous group meets on Wednesday and Friday
evenings, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the church's lower level. The Al-Anon
group for family members meets on Saturdays. There are two meetings, one
at 11 a.m. and another at 12 noon. For more information, please call AA
at 516-292-3040 or Al-Anon at 516-433-8003.
