Adult Learning

Lutherans are known not only as people of "the book" (the Holy Bible), but also lifetime learners. We believe spiritual formation occurs by participation in corporate worship, reception of the Sacrament of Holy Communion, prayer, meditation, and Bible reading and learning. To equip adults, several formation opportunities are open to all, members and community friends and neighbors.

Tuesday Bible Class meets Tuesday mornings September through July at 10:15 a.m. The gathering either probes a selected book of the Bible or thinks through in advance the scripture lessons for the following Sunday.

Seasonal study programs are usually offered in Advent (the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas) and in Lent. These gatherings usually include a light dinner and the sessions are topical. Last year's Lenten topic was "Good and Evil." As needed, special programs are offered. Recent programs in Christian ethics have included series of movie and book discussions.

Portals of Prayer is a daily devotional booklet distributed by mail to all members and parish friends on a quarterly basis. Members use this resource at home, on the train, or at lunchtime. Non-members may receive a copy of this guide by telephoning the church office, 516-767-0603. Additional published resources for meditation and edification are distributed monthly and seasonally.

Adult Membership Classes are offered for persons considering church membership and for Lutherans wishing to review the basic teachings of the Christian faith as we understand and confess them.
